The Warrant of Dispensation for the formation of Alma Lodge of Galt, Ontario, was issued by Most Worshipful Brother William Mercer Wilson, Grand Master of the Free and Accepted Masons of Canada on July 9,1856.
The Lodge was numbered 39 on the Grand Register. The Warrant carried the names of the eight Charter Members. Hiram Fulford was designated as Worshipful Master, Norman Booth as Senior Warden, and Amelius Irving, Junior Warden.
The Minute Book of the first meeting which was held on Thursday, August 21st,1856 reads as follows:
“Moved by the W.M., seconded by the S.W., that the following letter from the Grand Master be entered in the Minutes by the Secretary.
Simcoe, 18th August, 1856.
Hiram Fulford, Esq., W.M. Alma Lodge, Galt.
Worshipful Master and Dear Brother;
I hasten to avail myself of the earliest opportunity, to request that at the first meeting of your Lodge, you will, for myself and the other Grand Lodge Officers, present at the installation, tender to the Officers of Alma Lodge our hearty acknowledgments for their kind and fraternal welcome, and our thanks for their generous hospitality during our brief visit to your beautiful town.
In the hope that the G.A.O.T.U. may bless your labours abundantly, that your lodge may flourish, your Union strengthen, and your happiness abound,

The Warrant of Constitution for Alma Lodge No. 39 was dated Hamilton, July 29th,1857.
In 1859, Alma Lodge was transferred from Hamilton District to Huron District and the number was changed from 39 to 72.
